Why does my heel hurt when I get out of bed in the morning?

Heel pain that is at its worst when getting out of bed in the morning may be caused by a common foot condition called plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia, the thick band of tissue that connects the heels to the toes, becomes inflamed. The inflammation can cause pain on the bottom of the heel area and worsen over time. There are a variety of treatments available that can help you step out of bed each morning pain-free.

Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis
Pain from plantar fasciitis can develop and worsen over time. One of the first symptoms you may notice is a stabbing pain in your heel first thing in the morning that lessens as you walk around for a few minutes. The pain may be in one or both of your heels and can range from mild to severe. The reason for heel pain in the morning is that the plantar fascia has tightened overnight and needs time to loosen up when you first get up.

Does Morton's neuroma eventually go away?

Morton's neuroma happens when there is an overgrowth of nerve tissue on the bottom of the foot. This typically occurs at the base of the third and fourth toes and can cause pain in the ball of the foot. A Morton's neuroma is also known as an intermetatarsal neuroma. While there is no cure for this condition, symptoms can be treated and minimized through a variety of treatment options. If left untreated, Morton's neuroma can worsen over time and may require surgery.

Causes of Morton's Neuroma
Morton's neuroma is common in middle-aged women but can happen to people of all ages and both genders. When there is a repetitive overload on the foot, Morton's neuroma can develop. Some common causes of Morton's neuroma include:

Certain shoes. Wearing shoes that are narrow or have a high heel can put the foot in a strained position.
Weight. Being overweight can put too much pressure and weight on the feet.
Foot deformity. A foot deformity such as a bunion, hammertoe, flat feet, or a high arch can put you at risk for Morton's neuroma due to instability of the foot.
Activity. A high-impact activity such as running or a sport such as skiing can put pressure on your feet.
Trauma. An injury or trauma to the foot that swells and damages the nerve can cause Morton's neuroma.

How do I know if I need custom orthotics?

If you are experiencing foot pain and are looking for relief, a custom orthotic may be your solution. An orthotic is an insert worn in the shoe that can help with pain and discomfort. A podiatrist can prescribe a custom orthotic that can take pressure off specific areas of your foot and help you enjoy your daily activities without pain.

Common Signs That You Need Custom Orthotics
Anyone can benefit from wearing a custom orthotic in their shoe. If you stand on your feet for an extended period of time, notice that your shoes are wearing out faster in certain parts than others, or have pain in your legs, hips, or back, a custom orthotic may be an ideal solution.
